“Content is King”, they say. And even in Digital Marketing, it remained true to its regard.

That’s why if you’re aiming for a higher engagement (which is one of the key metrics to consider if your content is working), you need to start re-assessing your Digital Marketing strategy and be ready to fly.. higher!

One of the most common but effective strategies today is the “proper” development and usage of hashtags. #TrueStory

#Relate? Well, since hashtags are frequently used on social media these days, they have become an integral part of social media marketing, too.

Just a little travel down the memory lane, the use of hashtags was popularized, if not introduced, by social media giant “Twitter”.

You often see them in “tweets” that enable users to easily access a discussion mentioned in the hashtag.

Today, online marketers continue to capitalize on the use of hashtags for their brands on public platforms such as Twitter. And no need to wonder, it actually works!

In fact, a study conducted by project320.com (https://project320.com/resources/Twitter-cheat-sheet/#) shows that Tweets with one or two hashtags are more likely to receive two times more engagement than those Tweets without hashtags.

This study is also backed up by Twitter itself, saying “Tweets with hashtags (the # symbol, immediately followed by the subject or keyword related to the Tweet) can increase engagement almost by 100% (2x) for individuals and 50% (1.5x) for brands.”(https://blog.Twitter.com/official/en_us/a/2012/best-practices-for-journalists.html)

However, be careful in using hashtags because data also shows Tweets that use more than two hashtags drops the engagement by an average of 17%.

To ensure the #success in #HashtagMarketing, you should:

1. USE HASHTAGS YOUR CURRENT BRAND IS ASSOCIATED WITH.

-In generating hashtags, you should capitalize on your brand. Use your company name or tagline in creating your hashtags.

Highlight what your product is known for or how you want to be known.

One of these successful brand hashtags is #JustDoIt by Nike.

2. USE HASHTAGS THAT ARE CONNECTED WITH YOUR INDUSTRY.

-This technique helps you reach your target audience and engage them with your brand. This also helps you sell your brands for audiences who are not yet aware of your existence.

For example, if you’re targeting mothers who love to cook, you can simply use #recipe.

3. KNOW WHAT YOUR COMPETITORS ARE USING.

-A little bit of research won’t hurt you. If you suddenly come up with a hashtag, try to search it online. This is to ensure your chosen hashtag is relatively unique to your business. Unless you’re aiming to be called as #copycat, hmm?

4. MAKE IT SHORT AND EASY TO SPELL.

-In generating hashtags, there are many factors that need to be considered. But one of the most important tips that you should consider is your use of letters.

Always remember that “Wrong spelling is wrong!” #Proofread.

#ThisTechniqueAlsoHelps – By capitalizing the first letter of every word in your hashtag, it makes reading it easier.

5. JOIN THE BANDWAGON.

-Digital marketers should utilize what the trending hashtag in their area is.

By using a trending tag, your Tweet or post can be easily seen by a huge number of audiences.

6. GIVE YOUR AUDIENCE A CHANCE/REASON TO USE YOUR HASHTAG.

-Make your hashtag relatable and realistic so your audience can easily join the discussion.

7. BE SENSITIVE WITH THE USE OF WORDS.

– Be sensitive. I mean, it’s 2019! You should know what to use or not use online.

Again, research! Make sure your hashtag isn’t being used for the wrong reasons.

Don’t damage your brand with careless hashtagging.

8. BE CREATIVE!

-Your hashtag should be cheerful, funny and witty, especially if you’re targeting young audiences. Don’t settle for generic hashtags.

Now, go get back to #WerkWerkWerkWerk or #Werq?!
